How GST is calculated

GST is a percentage tax added on top of the base price of goods or services. For intra-state supply, the rate is split evenly into CGST and SGST; for inter-state supply it applies as a single IGST at the same total rate.

Adding GST: GST amount = Base × (rate ÷ 100); Total = Base + GST amount
Removing GST: Base = Total ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100); GST amount = Total − Base

The commonly used slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, alongside a 0% rate for exempt goods and a few special rates for specific categories.

What's the difference between adding and removing GST?

Adding starts from a base price and computes the tax and total. Removing starts from a GST-inclusive total and works backward to the base price.
