New regime slabs — FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27)

₹0 – 4,00,000: Nil ₹4,00,000 – 8,00,000: 5% ₹8,00,000 – 12,00,000: 10% ₹12,00,000 – 16,00,000: 15% ₹16,00,000 – 20,00,000: 20% ₹20,00,000 – 24,00,000: 25% Above ₹24,00,000: 30%

A standard deduction of ₹75,000 applies to salary income. Taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 gets a Section 87A rebate of up to ₹60,000, bringing net tax to zero — which is why a salaried person earning up to about ₹12.75 lakh typically pays no tax at all. A 4% health and education cess applies on top of the final tax.

Frequently asked

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free?

Under the new regime for FY 2025-26, yes — the Section 87A rebate cancels out tax on taxable income up to ₹12 lakh. With the ₹75,000 standard deduction, a salaried person can earn up to about ₹12.75 lakh gross and still owe nothing.

Does the rebate apply to capital gains?

No. It applies only to income taxed at normal slab rates — capital gains and other special-rate income are taxed separately and don't get the 87A rebate.

What about the old tax regime?

This calculator uses the new regime, which is the default from FY 2023-24 onward. The old regime (with HRA, 80C and other deductions) can still work out better for some taxpayers with large eligible deductions — compare both before deciding.
